Artist STatement and Biography
Artist Statement
The use of found or recycled materials in my work is a way of mitigating the disturbing amount of waste created by mass production and consumerism around me. Decorator fabrics, spray enamel and house paint are pre-fabricated in fashionable colors and patterns that seem designed to go out of style. I search second hand stores for discarded sheets and tablecloths that have reached the end of their first useful life, captivated by their mismatched patterns forced side by side.
Like a modern-day Dr. Frankenstein I sew these found parts together while finding a secret pleasure in juxtaposing the most conflicting designs. I choose these materials in order to breathe life into their mass-production. My intent is to create a harmony among the discord; the patterns merge within the work to become voices in a chorus unbounded by fashion trends.
The resulting images are organically inspired and hint at a “terrible beauty,” the possible result of genetic modification, pollution, or science gone wrong.
