Kelly Kievit

Current studio imagery and design philosophy stem from observation— from seeing a specific place and space and witnessing day-to-day vignettes of people within their personal environment; from recognizing the solid yet intangible gestures that define quality of life and create a sense of identity within the ephemeral.

Visits to Hong Kong and mainland China serve as points-of-departure for evolving iconography— the raucous color of street vendors’ wares, faded matchbooks bleached in the gutter, a green door covered in red paper remnants, the sharp white of the village plaster bin filled with reflected sky, a temple lacquered in tangerine and red, oxide stains from water pipes.

Surface tactility is an important aspect within the work, the evidence of the human hand interacting with materials to push two-dimensional surfaces toward three dimensional planes by building multiple layers then selectively removing visual elements from each— textures are created through collaged paper and by using marble, terra cotta, and limestone dust mixed with pigments; holes are pierced through the canvas and inked defining hairline contours; areas of color are applied then sanded away leaving behind ghost remnants.

Through glazing thin coats of oil paint over the surface of the canvas, a sense of depth is created within the picture plane. The colors used within the work are intense yet subdued, as though they have been pushed into the back of the canvas, more of a remembered hue than a directly perceived color.
