There are many historical parallels between the horse depicted in art, its role in
civilization and our own American experience. Early depictions of the horse are
represented by wartime, trade, and travel expeditions and conquests. In America, the
horse is iconic but not limited to Native Americans, cowboys, and the Western frontier.
More modern day depictions are of horse racing or rural pastoral scenes. Few
contemporary artist work with the horse as subject matter outside those boundaries of
