Welcome to another edition of the Fantasy Baseball Relief Pitcher Roundup! Today, we're diving into the performances of some of the top relievers from the previous day's games. Let's get started!
Seattle Mariners vs. Baltimore Orioles
The Mariners' bullpen was led by Andrés Muñoz, who bounced back with a solid outing. He threw 16 sliders in this 20-pitch performance, showcasing his command and control. However, the command wasn't perfect, as he walked one batter and allowed a hit. Muñoz's performance was a welcome sight for Mariners fans, who have been waiting for him to find his groove.
On the other side of the plate, Anthony Nunez struggled yet again. Over his past 19 innings, he has an 8.05 ERA and 1.68 WHIP. While there is some bad luck involved, I still wonder if a AAA stint to reset could be beneficial. Nunez's stuff is too good for him to struggle like this indefinitely.
Boston Red Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays
The Red Sox bullpen was led by Alec Gamboa, who was throwing in the 96 MPH range with 20.7" of iVB. While this isn't the norm for Gamboa, it's a positive sign that he has the velocity in him. I'd like to see more of Gamboa, and I'd rather the Red Sox DFA Coulombe if it means we get to see more of him for now.
The Rays' bullpen was led by Bryan Baker, who had a light week last week and came back strong. He threw 98+ MPH with some of the best stuff we've seen from him this season. No sliders here despite facing two righties, but the fastball/changeup combo is good enough most nights.
New York Yankees vs. Cleveland Guardians
The Yankees' bullpen was led by David Bednar, who led heavily with his splitter. He threw it 17 times, compared to just 9 fastballs and only one curveball. The command was not great, but it solidifies this new splitter-heavy approach from Bednar.
The Guardians' bullpen was led by Colin Holderman, who threw a perfect inning. However, Hunter Gaddis struggled against lefties, with a 2.81 WHIP and 1.090 OPS against. They may need to shield him from lefties moving forward.
Philadelphia Phillies vs. Toronto Blue Jays
The Phillies' bullpen was led by Brad Keller, who didn't allow a run despite the two baserunners. However, I'm not sure he's the best eighth-inning option for this team. He's maybe been the worst reliever in this bullpen outside of Banks since the start of May.
The Blue Jays' bullpen was led by Tommy Nance, who was back and throwing harder than usual. Those breakers looked great as they usually do.
Houston Astros vs. Los Angeles Angels
The Astros' bullpen was led by Josh Hader, who didn't throw his new cutter but had better fastball velocity and was around the zone at least. I'm still skeptical, but he'll likely be back on the holds list this week at least.
The Angels' bullpen was led by Kirby Yates, who started things off with a leadoff walk, which was obviously going to lead to a blown save. The fastball velocity is starting to creep up, and the stuff is not nearly as bad as it looked in his first few outings.
Cincinnati Reds vs. San Diego Padres
The Reds' bullpen was led by Tejay Antone, who struggled in this outing. Zach McCambley also struggled, allowing three earned runs in one inning.
The Padres' bullpen was led by Jason Adam, who faced some big-time swing and miss bats but looked great. Adrian Morejon also had a strong outing, throwing a perfect inning.
Washington Nationals vs. San Francisco Giants
The Nationals' bullpen was led by Clayton Beeter, whose fastball is still way down and the command is bad. I guess we are back to Gus Varland in the closer role, or maybe Brad Lord, Orlando Ribalta, or Riley Cornelio. Paxton Schultz is also in the mix.
The Giants' bullpen was led by Keaton Winn, who probably should not have been pitching for the third day in a row. I'm just not sure he’s that good, and at this point, I’d be intrigued with elevating Dylan Smith into the closer role.
Milwaukee Brewers vs. Athletics
The Brewers' bullpen was led by Joel Kuhnel, who threw 5 MPH harder in his first game with the team. I don’t think Kuhnel is all of a sudden going to be a 99-100 MPH guy, but I guess we should monitor just to make sure that isn’t the case?
The Athletics' bullpen was led by Luis Medina, who had a strong outing. However, the stadium circumstances made it hard to take anything seriously from this game.
